map swim the sound“SWIM Across The Sound” is a true classic marathon swim race… 25 km from Long Island, NY to Bridgeport, CT… across the Long Island Sound!

The only other race this long in the Global Swim Series is Russia’s the Kotlin Race, in St Petersburg, Russia.  This is a very tough distance, even for the experienced marathon swimmer, to be sure.  For this reason the race offers a “solo” division, but also offers several “relay” divisions, which can use wetsuits (only the solo division counts for GSS points).  The 25k solo division typically has up to 20 swimmers and is non-wetsuit.

The SWIM Across the Sound attracts new and experienced marathon swimmers from around the world to test their skill and preparation as solo swimmers. Many swimmers participate as a relay team member, enjoying the camaraderie and views of the NYC skyline swimming with their friends, family, co-workers and classmates in one of the SWIM’s six relay categories  The SWIM has been recognized as one of America’s Top 100 Open Water Swims by the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA).

The cause behind this race is very special too.  Since 1987 the SWIM has been a major fundraiser for the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation, raising over $2,000,000.  Each year over 300 swimmers, boat captains, and volunteers, families and friends join the SWIM to support its mission to help patients and their families impacted financially by cancer and provide screening and support services to our communities.

It is because of the great cause that people in the community and swimmers from around the world have supported this race and made it such a warm, enthusiastic and high spirited event!

PS.  this is too good of a challenge to pass up… I’m swimming this race this summer!  Fingers crossed!
